What to write in a Thanksgiving card: 25 messages for family, friends, and coworkers

Thanksgiving is the one holiday with gratitude built into the name, and almost nobody sends a card for it. That's the opportunity. A Thanksgiving card arrives in a mailbox that has nothing else in it yet, a week before the holiday-card flood. Here's what to write.

Happy Thanksgiving. Of everything I'm grateful for this year, you're near the top. Thanks for the calls, the advice, and the way you always pick up.

Keep it to one real thing

The best Thanksgiving message names one specific thing you're grateful for about that person this year. Not 'thankful for you' but 'thankful you drove up when Dad was in the hospital.' One sentence of that is worth a paragraph of general warmth.

Then wish them a good holiday and, if you won't be together, say so. That's the whole card.

When to mail it

Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, November 26. Order by November 18 to arrive comfortably before the holiday; a week ahead is the latest we'd suggest. A card that arrives the Monday or Tuesday of Thanksgiving week is perfectly timed.

If you're sending more than one, keep the same photo and change the note for each person. Saved addresses make the second card a one-minute job.
