Veterans Day card messages: what to write to a veteran you know

'Thank you for your service' is fine, and most veterans hear it once a year from strangers. A card from someone who knows them should say more. Here's how to write one that doesn't sound like a bumper sticker, with twenty examples.

Happy Veterans Day, Dad. I know you don't talk about it much, but I think about what you gave up for us. Thank you. I'm proud to be your kid.

Make it about them, not the military

The strongest Veterans Day notes do three things. Thank them for their service in one plain sentence. Say one specific thing you admire about them, from their service or from now. Then say something about your relationship today.

You don't need to know details about where or when they served. Most veterans would rather you didn't guess. Stick to what you know: who they are to you.

To a parent or grandparent

  • Happy Veterans Day, Dad. I know you don't talk about it much, but I think about what you gave up for us. Thank you. I'm proud to be your kid.
  • Grandpa, thank you for your service, and for every story you've told me since. Happy Veterans Day. I'm bringing the kids Sunday.
  • Mom, you served before most people thought women did. Thank you. You're the toughest person I know, and the kindest.
  • Happy Veterans Day to the man who taught me to make a bed, show up early, and keep my word. Thank you for all of it.
  • Thank you for your service, Dad, and for coming home and being our father. That was the harder job. Love you.

To a spouse or partner

  • Happy Veterans Day. Thank you for who you were then and who you are to me now. Proud of you every day.
  • I didn't know you when you served, but I know the person it made. Thank you. Happy Veterans Day.
  • Thank you for your service, and for choosing a quieter life with me after. Happy Veterans Day, love.

To a friend

  • Thinking of you this Veterans Day. Thank you for what you did, and for who you've been to me since. Coffee soon?

  • Thank you for serving, and for bringing that same calm to every crisis here. Happy Veterans Day.

To a neighbor or someone in the community

  • Thank you for your service, and for the years since. The way you look out for everyone on our street is the same thing in a different uniform.
  • Happy Veterans Day from the family three doors down. Thank you for your service. Our kids think you're the coolest person on the block.
  • Thank you for serving. We're grateful to have you as a neighbor. Happy Veterans Day.
  • To Coach: thank you for your service to the country and to a few hundred kids since. Happy Veterans Day.
  • Happy Veterans Day. Thank you for your service and for every Tuesday you volunteer at the pantry. You've never stopped serving.
